True Love This painting is about perfect communication, about finding something your soul requires: your other self. It is about making a choice, trusting your instincts, about messages and making contact. A heart over the head and again on the front of the woman’s body means love (over lust) and refinement of earthly desires. The man and woman are the yin and yang of love and also represent Gemini, the air sign. Air is the element of communication, which is needed or a healthy relationship. The two human bodies are positioned in the form of a cross, and one is standing while the other is dancing – both positions signifying binaries in balance. The woman’s physical dependence on the man’s body to reach his mouth is about the feminine dependence on physical strength. The seven chakras hinted at with color on the woman’s body represent the spiritual aspect of woman, something that the masculine needs too. Seven means mastery over wild forces, a feminine strength. The color of the man’s skin is exactly the same as the color of the Earth and the stone, showing that man is made of the stuff of our planet. This corresponds to the five senses and the sensual aspect of life. The two stones also represent Earth, which means the physical things of life, such as security, home, and nature. The also stand for manifestation and realization. Two stones indicate balance and duality, but importantly, instinctual knowledge. Black hair and a black shoe on the woman are also Earth signifiers, as are the visible muscles, connecting tissue and bones. The man’s hair is shown as a brain, which corresponds symbolically to the element of air and represents the mind, intellect, rationality, and -- again – communication. This strength must be balanced by spirit and feeling, which it is in this painting. Blue rain clouds are a feminine symbol of water and represent emotions, which form a balance to the four phallic blue spruce trees signifying sexual desire. The number of trees visible – four – signifies a kind of stability, a holding pattern if you will. For the moment, everything is still, solid, rooted, established, and the sex act has not yet taken place. Eight guppies (hinting at sperm) swimming forth hint at the future consummation of the sexual act. The number eight is about moving, taking action, courage and transformation. Wild ginger leaves represent the properties of the spice. Ginger takes its name from the Sanskrit word “stringa-vera”, which means “with a body like a horn” as in antlers. Antlers are symbolic of the “horniness” and body of Pan, the God of Love and Choice. Ginger root is used for morning sickness (a warning) and to warm the body and increase perspiration (another hint at the future sexual act). Ten leaves represent transcendent completion, the ultimate climax. |
